Broomhill

Broomhill is one of the most western areas of Sheffield and lies on the A57 which takes you over the Snake Pass and into Manchester. It’s a suburb that, while being a 5 minute drive to the Peak District and a 20 minute walk to Sheffield city centre, has everything you need without having to travel any great distance. The Broomhill High Street is populated with a Somerfield supermarket, a hardware store, Boots, bookstores, bakeries, hairdressers, coffee bars, banks, friendly pubs and restaurants. There’s a great fresh produce grocer, an Oriental supermarket and a health food store all within a stone’s throw of one another so creating interesting meals without travelling miles going to Tesco isn’t a problem. Try Remo’s for a great fresh coffee or hot chocolate to perk you up during the day or Thyme café for a nice meal at night. The night life is good (even on public holidays) and you never have far to get home after a few drinks. The Place is just off main road and merits a visit, it’s bright and clean inside and the ambiance is good.

This area is only a short walk from both Universities and the Royal Hallamshire hospital and as such has a lively student population. That said, once a public holiday comes along, it’s understandable that it becomes very quiet and peaceful for a couple of days! Accommodation is plentiful with flats above most of the stores and quiet houses a short walk in any direction from the main street. It’s a safe area of Sheffield – within 5 minutes walking distance of 3 different schools.

Buses are the most convenient form of public transport here, with services running into town every 5 to 10 minutes and it’s not difficult to find a cab if you’re getting cold waiting. The tram station is a 10 minute walk downhill if you’re brave enough to head to Meadowhall for your shopping. If you’re lucky enough to get a day off with some decent weather, head down towards Ecclesall Roaduntil you get to Endcliffe Park and take the ‘Around Sheffield Walk’ out towards the beautiful Peak District – it’s a lovely way to spend a day!
