Dronfield


The township of Dronfield lies 6 miles south of Sheffield centre and 6 miles north of Chesterfield while being only 3 miles from the Peak District national park. The three areas that make up Dronfield (Dronfield Woodhouse, Dronfield and Coal Aston) have a combined population of almost 23,000 spread over almost 3,500 acres of land. The area is quite detached from Sheffield and retains its own personal character – many of the buildings in the town centre are of historic interest and the early Gothic Parish Church is approaching 900 years of age.


Dronfield has a proud history of producing some fine flower displays throughout the town and has done well in a number of competitions such as Britain in Bloom, East Midlands in Bloom and the Derbyshire Best Kept Village competition.


The town has a number of established industries from engineering works to modern computer stores. A Somerfield, Sainsbury’s and Costcutter are all situated locally so there’s no unnecessary travelling into Sheffield and fighting for parking.


There is an active community notice board at www.dronfield.gov.uk which details regular and upcoming events such as social events (coffee mornings at the Civic Hall,) Jumble Sales, fitness classes and other sporting events.


Local educational facilities include the Dronfield Infants School, Dronfield Holmesdale Infants School, Dronfield Junior School and the Dronfield Henry Fanshawe School (specialising in technology with almost 2,000 students.)


The High Street really consists of
Sheffield Road
and Chesterfield road and between them they offer a selection of jewellers, fashion stores, an art gallery, restaurants, a cycling store, opticians, dentists and estate agents. There’s no shortage of pubs in the local area – The Hallowes, The Old Sidings, The White Swan, Bridge Inn, Green Dragon Inn, The Blue Stoops, The Greyhound Pub, The Hyde Park Inn, The Cross Daggers and the Chequers Inn are all walking distance from one another.


The Hallowes Golf Club is an 18 hole course with modern facilities – the clubhouse itself was constructed in 1657. The facilities include bars, changing rooms, snooker tables, a formal dining room and views of the Peak District. A pro golf shop is available with some helpful staff to get you started.
The Birch Hall Golf Club lies a bit further south (2 miles north of Chesterfield) and offers similar facilities.
Buses run regularly from Dronfield to either Sheffield or Chesterfield, times and service vary depending on the day and company you travel with.
