Sheffield Property Rent Home > Useful Resources > Sheffield Area Guide's > Ecclesall & Ecclesall Road
Ecclesall & Ecclesall RoadEcclesall is typified by leafy Knowle Lane, with its large detached houses and 1930s semis. Ringinglow Road also offers sizable semis in Ecclesall. Over in the direction of Bents Green, the semis aren’t so imposing yet still good-sized homes. Ecclesall Roadis lined by large properties in this area. Further down, towards and beyond Hunter’s Bar, Ecclesall Roadbecomes predominantly commercial, though it still also features spacious Victorian properties. Close to shops, restaurants and campuses, many of these Ecclesall Road houses provide shared accommodation for students. Historically, there was never a village of Ecclesall, but the name has come to signify a comfortable suburb in southwestern Sheffield. Ecclesall has the dual advantages of being close to the Peak District and yet within easy reach of Hunter’s Bar, with its cosmopolitan atmosphere and lively street scene and café life. Ecclesall has a parade of shops including a local Spar supermarket and a hairdressers on Ringinglow Roadclose to the junction with Knowle Lane. Other local shops and some restaurants are to be found nearby on Ecclesall Road. Further down Ecclesall Road, Hunter’s Bar has an excellent variety of restaurants and shopping. There isn’t a large supermarket on the doorstep of Ecclesall. There is, however, a good choice of supermarkets within easy driving distance. These include Waitrose right at the bottom of Ecclesall Road, and Tesco and Sainsbury’s off Abbeydale Road. Ecclesall’s streets are generally quiet and it has below average crime rates for the city. There is a higher risk of street crime or burglary at the lower end of Ecclesall Road towards the city centre. Ecclesall offers good state-sector education. Ecclesall Junior School performs well at Key Stage 2. At both Silverdale and High Storrs secondary schools, GCSE results are above the national average. Ecclesall Church has long been a prominent feature on the upper reach of Ecclesall Road. It has its origins in a chapel founded near here by Sir Ralph de Ecclesall in the 13th century. Originally there was a pinfold for keeping animals to the front of the church. As late as the mid-19th century, Ecclesall Church stood alone here, surrounded by fields. Professional families are the typical Ecclesall residents. Middle-class and mainly white, they are well off (as properties here don’t come cheap), but not ostentatiously so. The priorities of Ecclesall residents tend to be good schools, both state and private, and a safe area in which to bring up the kids. Ecclesall Roadbelow Hunter’s Bar is a different story. This is a territory ruled by the Sheffield student, a numerous species. Hunter’s Bar is a five-minute drive away down Ecclesall Road; Sheffield’s city centre is ten to 15 minutes’ drive, depending on traffic. Buses are also available on this route into town. The lower part of Ecclesall Roadsuffers from sluggish traffic at the busier times of day. Click for Property To Let in Ecclesall |
