Hillsborough

Hillsborough lies north west from Sheffield centre, along the A6102 or Pennistone Road. This is where the rivers Rivelin and Loxley flow into the River Don. The area is serviced very regularly by buses (such as the 53, every 5 to 10 minutes) running in all directions as well as trams running back and forth to the town centre as well as Meadowhall and the Don Valley Stadium and Arena.

The area is known locally for its many shops and relatively easy access but more importantly for being home to Sheffield Wednesday Football Club. Sheffield is home to the world’s two oldest football clubs – Sheffield FC (1857) and Hallam FC (1860) and their history is documented at http://www.swfc.premiumtv.co.uk/page/HistoryDetail/0,,10304~65717,00.html explaining how we have come to have SWFC. It’s always an interesting day out when there’s a game on between this team and Sheffield United, the whole town comes to life!

Schools in the Hillsborough area include Hillsborough College and Hillsborough Primary School. Watermead Infants School is a few minutes drive away.
Driving towards Hillsborough from Sheffield you’ll come across the Cask and Cutler (great reviews online,) Hillsborough Hotel, The Freemason’s Arms (often have guest beers on tap,) The New Barrack Tavern, The Garrison Hotel, The Old Blue Ball (£1 pints on Mondays and Thursdays,) and the Deep End (a pub/bar/restaurant that has been converted from a swimming pool!)

There’s a big Morrison’s supermarket and a number of local stores nearby – including a pet shop, Superdrug, and the Jalucy Coffee Shop. La Vida Loca with its own bar and wide range of meals has good online reviews. The Taste of India and the Koh-I-Noor serve a range of Indian dishes and La Civetta, an Italian restaurant, is nearby Hillsborough Park.

Hillsborough Park spans 20 hectares and has a great range of facilities such as fishing, playground, sports areas, walled garden and a number of historic buildings. As an interesting piece of trivia, Hillsborough is where Liquorice Allsorts are made, by Bassetts.
