Nether Edge

Nether Edge is a very calm residential area atop a hill that sprawls down into the Sharrow Vale and Ecclesall Road areas on one side and towards Woodseats on the other. The area is quite easy to find, just point yourself in the direction of the Mariott Hotel (it’s signposted around Sheffield,) and you’ll find yourself right in the middle.

The area is quite hilly, so quite challenging if you’re up for a run, but due to the absence of any major commerce in the area, there’s very little traffic on the wide roads. Nether Edge seems to be populated mostly by young families along the roads lined with some very tall semi-detached houses. The roads are tidy and the trees that line them are well established. As for shops, a Jackson’s supermarket, Thresher’s bottle shop, Post Office and a couple of independent fruit and veg shops are all on the one corner. If you’re up for a bigger shopping trip, it’s a short drive to the Tesco and Sainsbury’s retail park in Woodseats or the Waitrose at the bottom of Ecclesall Road. There are several schools in the immediate area but parking doesn’t seem to present a problem, even at peak times.

Nether Edge has loads of great restaurants within a 10 minute walk away, down in the Sharrow Vale area. The Mediterranean always serves delicious food and there are a couple of good chip shops for a quick take away. The local pubs are quiet and civilised and they serve some great beer from the nearby Abbeydale brewery. The Psalter is bright and airy and quite spacious inside with a lot of beers on tap. Nearby is the Lescar which is also a great comedy club on a Thursday, but you’ll need to book a week or two in advance for a place as it’s very popular.
