Review on Cornwall Works in SheffieldCornwall works is located in the heart of Kelham Island on Bowling Green Street. Kelham Island was an important industrial area in Sheffield's history and was the first Industrial Conservation Area to be designated in Sheffield a move that acknowledged the fundamental role that the metal trades had in the development of the city. As Kelham Island shifts from an industrial area to one of Sheffield's central city residential areas there is a strong drive from council to incorporate the historical idustrial buildings into the new developments. Around Globe Works and Cornish Place, 10 of the Conservation Area’s 16 listed buildings and structures related to the metal trades are located. Conversion projects at Cornish Place and Brooklyn works, which provide over 100 loft style, live/work and new build flat accommodation units has shifted Kelham Island from an industrial quarter to residential address. However a council report on May 2005 identified major issues with Kelham Island such as "fly parking" during work hours and 24 hour kerb crawling and associated substance abuse. Kelham island is currently a hive of activity with road works, numerous cranes and buildings littered with business space to let signs. Cornwall Works is now released and available to buy off plan and is due for completetion in nine to twelve months. A part conversion, part new build of the former Parkin Silversmith's workshop Cornwall works consists of 65 apartments encased in this four storey building. The apartments take the form of one and two bedroom loft style apartments with various layouts and sizes available. Many of the apartments host balconies or terraces and are constructed around an centrally landscaped courtyard. This courtyard was intitually criticsied on the 14th December 2005 by the council board for being too narrow. Access into the apartments is via a entrance lobby with key fob systems with each apartment also having an audio entry phone with a CCTV camera link to the TV. Postal boxes are located in the lobby. The floors (corridors and living areas) throughout the complex will be carpeted, with the living areas in a neutral Berber. Doors to the apartments are featured in a hardwood veneer with the internal doors in white. The industrial echos of the building will be reflected in the decor. Internal walls and ceilings of the apartments are to be smooth and painted with high thermal performance windows and individual slimline panel heaters. There will be electrical high-pressure water storage. The kitchen hosts a quality range of applicances with extractor and integrated oven and hob. The floor of the kitchen will be laminated/ vinyl with space for fridge/freezer and plumbing for washer/dryer. Downlights in recessed chrome finish feature in the kitchen area, with wall lights in the living areas and Pendant fittings in the bedroom and hall area. The bathroom is titled fully on the floor and the walls 50% tiled. Chrome finish of the appliances flow into the bathroom and feature throughout heated towel rail, thermostatically controlled mixer unit, taps and fittings. The bathroom is a wash with modern white ceramic bathroom fittings and also hosts sermi-recessed downlights and electric shaver and toothbrush sockets. The apartments have BT telephone points in the bedroom and living areas with Broadband, Cable/Satellite available subject to subscriptions. There is lift access to the top two storeys.
