Review on The Base Building in Sheffield

The Base Building boasts "a unique architectural style" and "contemporary living spaces" with 15 one and two bedroom open plan living/kitchen apartments wrapped around a private courtyard. Some of the apartments feature balconies overlooking the landscaped courtyard and the historic Trafalgar Street. Trafalgar Street houses some significately historic buildings such as The Kangaroo works, a factory built in 1906 for famous British manufacturer Moore & Wright. As it stands these historic buildings look very run down from the outside, added with a vacant block acting as a car park, Trafalgar Street as it stands isn't the most scenic location in Sheffield.

Victoria Hall apartments stand along side The Base Building along with student apartments. Due to the proximity of Trafalgar Street to the city centre it is only a matter of time before the rest of the street is developed as well. As the City Centre is developed motions have been put into get rid of these historic buildings on Trafalgar Street and on 16th February 2006 the Conservation Advisory Group voiced its concern for the loss of important buildings associated with the metal trades in the block between Trafalgar Street and Wellington Street, notably the Trafalgar and Kangaroo Works.

The proximity of the Devonshire Quarter to the city centre is evolving this area into a dense inner urban neighbourhood with a strong emphasis on residential mixed use. The Devonshire Quarter has to it a "village" feel already with a cluster of small specalistics shops. This has been recognised and there is a drive to maintain this strong characteristic of the area. Part of the appeal of The Devonshire Quarter as a desirable residential location is grounded in its ability to maintain this "village" feel desite its vicinity to the city centre. Its a fine line between housing many people into one of limited city centre areas and making that city living feel spacous.

The Devonshire Green is the largest public park in the city centre and its proximity to the Base Building is a highly attractive feature. There is a strong pedestrian focus for this area in the future with the possibility to evenually remove all the car parking on the Devonshire Green, and to landscape the public space. The Base building has car parking available by separate negotiation and pricing maybe in the vicintiy of £17,500 each.

The Devonshire Quarter is a prime location to not only Sheffield's city centre but also to the Moor, which in the near future will also undergo a major re-development. The Base Building is well in walking distance of both of these as well as excellent transport links. Also very close to University of Sheffeild and Hallam University. Prices for the apartments look set to range from £110,000.00 to £139,425 for a one bedroom flat and £142,500 to £208,500 for a two bedroom flat.
